Caring for a Dying Animal

The time around an animal's transition can be a period of great closeness for the animal and his person as well as a time of growth and transformation; for this reason working with people and their animals during this period is very rewarding.

When an animal is approaching his transition, communication is reassuring for both the animal and his person. Animals often have important matters they want to talk about with their people as they prepare to leave this world. These matters can involve their physical comfort, the effects of treatments and/or medications, eating issues, and important emotional and spiritual matters they want to share with their people before they leave.

Communicating with an animal assists people in understanding how to help their companion be comfortable at the end of his life and, along with Reiki and flower essences, helps the transition to be as easy and peaceful as possible for everyone. Most importantly, communication helps the animal and the person to share their hearts with each other so that each can have comfort and a sense of completion as their time together in a physical form draws to an end.

Hospice Care

Under a palliative care plan developed by your Veterinarian, we provide medical care for your sick or dying animal in your own home. We offer in-home consulting and caregiving assistance within Summit County and the Greater Salt Lake Area. For other locations, we offer telephone and email consultations to help manage the practical aspects of caring for your animal. We encourage active participation between caregivers and their chosen veterinarians to develop a safe, loving environment for animals and their human families.

Ongoing caregiving may, at times, seem overwhelming. Some people experience feelings of anxiety, anger, impatience, guilt, and loneliness. It is not uncommon that a caretaker may become so exhausted from taking care of their animal and sacrificing themselves that they become less stable in providing for both themselves and their animal. In order to provide genuine, loving care for their animal, caregivers are generally best served by finding ways and resources to take care of themselves in concert with caring for their animal.

We understand that the pressures of jobs and families and other obligations may strain a caregiver. We also provide both practical and moral support for caregivers through email, telephone and in-home consultations.

Additional services that we offer include administering medications, Respite Care, Grief support to help you get through this difficult time, and helping you plan a memorial that is fitting for your pet.

We also offer referrals to Alternative Health Care Practitioners that may aid in increasing the comfort level of your pet as well Veterinarians who are able to come to your home in case of emergency or the need for home euthanasia.
